was skimming through Ebay tonight and came across this... Absolutely beautiful 302 deskset.... anyone want it??? it just listed today.  it has a matching lamp and the sellers handle is "Modjunkie" I'd snatch it up in a heartbeat but I'm overstocked with 302's right now!

It looks strange, but extremely well done!

right Christian.. and in the description it's written " Kind Experimental Red Chrome " that's why we have not seen one like this :D..anyways, it's new to my eyes.

Agreed. It is a nice curiosity but WE did not make it. In my opinion it falls into the same category as the painted phones with handset bands that Phoneco sells.

From the Ebay listing:

One of a Kind Experimental Red Chrome
Western Electric 302 Telephone

Works fine! Extension phone. No ringer. I do have a Tandy in line ringer. I will include it IF I can find it.

I purchased a house years ago from a Detroit chemical engineer
who did work for the car manufacturers.

His son explained that his Dad had developed the "red chrome"
finish for use in car bumpers etc.

This phone and the matching lamp (see my other items)
were used as experimental demos to be shown to
the car companies. The process never took off.

I have never seen anything like this.

Note the original phone number tags!

Be sure to look at the lamp too!

Now, knowing how it was done, could it be done again?  Since WE made "pot" metal phones, could this be done to a 211, 212, or a metal 302? Even a 202 for that matter... Oldphoneworks does custom work, wonder how much they'd charge for a 202 in that finish, or something close to it?  gets one wondering how to refinish a classic telephone in a new style! that phone surely was "One of a Kind"!

This seller is basically in my backyard. Sorry guys but different strokes for different folks. This phone has zero appeal for me, but more power to the guy. Supposedly he found a buyer, so good for him!
