Not quite 6K! Mentioned on the listserve as 50A upper with extra holes, 50A backboard, and early 139A
mount. The Gray Paystation expert has not chimed in on it yet. An interesting bid history:

How do you tell from the pictures that the back is from a 50A?

Completely crazy, lol. Bid history shows it's just two emotional egos clashing.
Could have bought another, much nicer Gray 174G for $3200 BIN.

Most 174Gs are conversions from Gray/Western150Gs. The separate transmitter and receiver, original hook, 5-cent lead coin chute are all updated including a 10-cent coin chute. Still, I wouldn't think a 174G would be worth more than $900---unless it has a 50A back and upper housing as the one that sold for $5900 has.

Here's the $3200 one and one that sold in November:

It's back again...item 261191316068 with the seller saying the bidder backed out.  Nearly $6k and a high bidder with a feedback of '1'?   I never thought that would end well.  It always seemed to smell badly to me.

I wonder if he offered a second chance offer to w***e. If not, why did he sell it for $2,500 buy-it-now?

Can someone provide a picture of the cast iron back on a Gray or Gray/Western 50G, 150G, 55G or 155G? I am trying to see how it is different from the 50A back that just sold.

5***5 was only in the bidding once at $500 and jumped for the BIN at $2,500. Interesting.

Does anyone have a Gray or Gray/WE pay phone with a cast iron back? I am trying to learn the difference in the early Gray 50A backs and the later 50G/150G backs. A photo of the back of the phone would help. Thanks

Here's one to look over David. I will try and get some more photos up.

Ray, thanks for the link. I see that the 50A does not have the 3 additional screws on the lower back. Are there other differences?

Stan Schreier emailed me with the following information pertaining to this thread...

"You might want to post the following on the Classic Rotary Phone forum.

David Willingham asked a question about the differences in the back
castings of the various model 3-slots. He wanted to know how you can tell
a 50A back casting by having a picture taken from the back.  The answer is
you can't.

There is only one characteristic that is unique to a 50A back casting.
The casting must match the 50A hook (also unique).  The 50A hook had no
position limits cast in it. Since there were no limits cast in the hook
there was no need for landing pads in the back casting to match.  Take a
look at the attached photos. They should clarify the situation."
