Hello.  I'm new to the forum, and was wondering if anyone could help me date this British/Australian 300 series phone that my sister gave me.  She picked it up from across the street as the old lady there was throwing it out as rubbish  ::)

I have cleaned it up pretty well.  Removing a fair bit of white paint splatter, and polishing it with Novus 2 and then Novus 1. I also have a new dial label coming next week which will make it look sweet.

OK, so from the outside it looks like a 300.  However, it has a 400 series base plate with no date markings, just "1/401" and on the inside of the base plate it has a GPO 400 series wiring diagram.

The handset is marked "164 62"

From what I understand, 164 is the handset type, and I was under the impression 62 was the year it was made.   However, they stopped making 300 series phones in the mid 50's, and changed to the 400 series in Australia from the mid 50's to 1962.

I will post some pics of the phone below.  If anyone can tell me what the 164 62 means, that would be excellent :)

Cheers
Rod

Someone must be able to shed some light on this one for Rod?

Doesn't the "62" mean it was made in 1962?

Why is it a "400" series rather than a 300?

Not sure about the 62, but the 400 part is probably cos it's an aussie phone, as they turned the 300 into the 400 series for some reason... ???
