Title: What happened to the Modify option in posts?
Post by: Greg G. on January 01, 2018, 01:15:35 AM
I went to revise a previous post and noticed there is no Modify option.  I checked other old posts and they didn't have it either.  ???

Is it a time-out thing? I just looked at my older posts, no Modify option, but my recent ones (in the Happy New Year thread) still have it, so I guess after a certain time, the editing option goes away...

It's a standard feature on most forums, gives you the option to correct spelling errors and/or adding/removing parts of the post to correct information, but after a certain time, it's locked in and that's that without Moderator or Administrator intervention...

We were wondering when someone would notice that change and knew it was only a matter of time. We used to be able to modify posts here even years later but other forums, as TwoCV describes, allow only a short period of time for modifications. We are trying a time-out of one half a week at the moment, once a post is 3.5 days old it can no longer be modified. There is a reason which I won't get into at the moment. It is still subject to adjustment. We have made some allowances for individual posts that are continuously added to but there could be other topics/posts that may need solutions.

IMHO, I prefer the old way.  I have modified posts years later only because I had new information, removed unnecessary "wordiness", edited to make it more clear and/or added or replaced pictures with better ones.  Sometimes I go back and correct punctuation, spelling and grammar errors because they drive me nuts!

I agree with Briny, and for the same reasons.

I'm used to work with a time limit for modifications, many other forum do so. It prevents the forum from abuse and endangering of loss of the valuable information writen many years before. I'm fine with that. I correct what I find right after posting or maybe the next day- if any modifications really have to be done after the time limit, I still can ask a mod/admin for help. And if I have to ad some information, I make a new post even after years. And if needed, the posts can be put together to one from any mod/admin too. Most of us are reasonable users of course, but there are still some out there who aren't, sad but that's life. Better this way than learning the hard way who might be one of the non reasonable ones.

You are wise beyond your years Haf (if that makes sense). For the record my thoughts are that it was great the way it was before. No one makes more typos than me and my iPad. But for the good of the forum I don't know that it can be that way anymore unfortunately. Adjustments to the reasonable length of time to be able to edit a post is open to members thoughts though.

I like the time limit. If someone has a change after the timeout, a new post in that thread helps keep the change visible - something might have changed or been updated, but many folks who use the "new post" feature (which I use, unless I'm looking for something specific) might never see the change, especially after a few days.

Just my 2¢...

My understanding is that the modify option has a time limit, due to the recent events surrounding a member that went back to old posts a deleted all informatioin posted by that individual.
Though we can't control providers like Photobucket, we need to do all we can to limit the same situation happening to written data.

So that "saying" translates properly? You could also be very young but very wise, seemingly too wise for the number of years experience on earth that you have.

AE_Collector,

I don't know if properly, but I understand the meaning. But when I hear wise I always have some white haired Chinese with a looong white beard in mind reciting some Confucius whisdom.. or maybe mixing the words up I should like Yoda I sound.. ;)

There are actually two time limits related to the "modify" button.

1) Courtesy Edit time limit which is currently set to 3 minutes. This allows the person making the post 3 minutes to modify the post before the

line shows up at the bottom of the post.

2) Modify Edit time limit set to 7 days as of Jan 1, 2018, today. That allows the person who made the post or reply one week to change it and the

will appear at the bottom. After one week, only a moderator can edit posts/replies that are more than one week old.

The Courtesy Edit is nice in that it allows a person to correct immediately errors (context, formatting, carriage returns, forgetting to attach images or attaching the wrong image or forgetting to put a link in the body of the text). 3 minutes is plenty of time to fix the immediately obvious errors.

The 7 day modify limit will prevent removal of the content within posts that are more than 7 days old, all of which are important to the posterity of forum and its more than 9 years of information.

It is highly suggested that modifications to old posts be done by creating a new reply using the "quote" option in the erroneous post/reply so that both the incorrect information (now in quotes) and the correct information can be seen in the same reply. Anyone viewing the revision would then be able to see not only the correction/addition modification but also the original, erroneous text for a quick comparison.

Not being allowed to modify old posts forced me to rethink what I post.  Especially when you're on the world wild web sometimes its necessary to make changes.  Without the ability to make changes I find myself being much more careful about what I post here and have reduced the amount of posts.  Rather unfortunate.

I was not aware of "bad apples" until I had a nasty exchange with one of them in June or July.  Even after some "house cleaning", I wasn't aware of the sabotage that was going on.  So in that respect, the time out is needed.  I tend to get really picky about information and how my posts are worded, hence it often takes me a while to post even a few lines.  I can always formulate my posts offline then cut and paste.

I can not say for sure, But I would imagine that John can also unlock a thread if the need be, temporarily, if he is contacted.
If wrong please accept my apology for misinformation.
The 7 day limit, will be more than sufficient I feel. I subscribe to John's QUOTE option. That way all original wording is preserved. Especially if the instance occurs, where a dispute over what was said in a thread, is questioned.

It's been a while!

What was the 'sabotage' or dust up?

I thought gallery was always open to editing, but didn't know you could edit any post after 24 hours or so.

Anyway, who would I contact to update my gallery?  Got rid of some photos of phones I don't own, but now the dialogue doesn't make sense.  ; )

thx

Hi Bruce:

Good to see you back. Reading the Navy Phones topic I thought "haven't seen Slal for awhile now" and then, there you were back again!

This is the topic you are wondering about updating? Your "My Telephone Collection" topic...

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=11787.0

All topics could be edited forever until very recently so we haven't determined the best way to allow you to do some editing of posts more than one week old. Will talk with John to see what he wants to do. If it is just a few pictures to delete or several posts to delete we can easily do that for you. PM me or Teleplay what needs doing. If it's more involved than that we have other possibilities.
