Title: Weird yellow 554 on e-bay
Post by: McHeath on January 11, 2010, 11:34:02 PM
So, any theories as to why this yellow and ordinary modular 554 has sticky tape names around the dial?  It looks like something that you would expect to see with a speed-dial setup, which of course can't be possible, so why does this phone have it?

(unless it has a Rotatone inside, highly unlikely in my vote)

At one point I had speed dialing as part of my phone company bundle. You could assign speed dial #'s that were stored at the central office. I never used the service except to try out. there was 2 levals of service. I think the first leval gave you 10 speed dial #s.
I do think it worked w/rotary, but you probably  had to dial the # or * .

Just a guess.

Speed dialing did work with rotary phones.  I never used it, but I remember seeing information about it years ago.  To use it, one would dial 1-1-x-x, or something like that.

My aunt had speed dial on her rotary phones. This was at least ten or twelve years ago, through Southern Bell. She dialed a 2-digit access number and then the speed dial number. It was almost as many dial pulls as just dialing a local number, but I guess it saved time on long distance calls.
