Title: Telephone Du Jur: Stromberg-Carlson 1800
Post by: Adam on June 10, 2011, 12:35:05 PM
As you know, I rotate phones in use in my home/office frequently from my collection.  For my birthday I have unearthed my Stromberg-Carlson 1800-type multi-line phone which is designed like the Western Electric Call Director (my all-time fave phone).

I especially like this set because it's rotary and also because it's black.  I wish I could find a nice example of this set with the older style buttons.

The glow near the dial in the area of the 5 is just a reflection, the face-plate on this phone is flat and consistently silver paper all around.

I think this is a really cool phone.  Does anybody else have any out-of-the-ordinary key sets that you really like?

I don't have a favorite (yet), but yours is a neat looking phone in a small package. What kind of system do you have it hooked up to? I have a 1A2 system that a TCI member gave to me but I still have to go & pick it up. That should be a whole new (and interesting) learning experience.
And by the way, a belated Happy Birthday to you.

Thanks! :)

Most of my experience in telephony, decades ago, was installation and service of 1A2 key systems, so if you need any help hooking up or troubleshooting anything 1A2 related, please ask!

Currently, simply because of space considerations, I do not have a key system installed here at my place.  I always have a 1A2 key set on my desk here, it is plugged into a 66E3-25 block (the small square one with a punch-down block and a female 25 pair connector). I have 4 lines from my Asterisk PBX wired to the appropriate places on the block, plus I jumpered it together with a 2012A transformer so that the button lights when I pick up a line.  I don't have any key system hold capability with this setup, but I don't really need any because I use all the hold/park/transfer etc. features of my PBX.

You can actually see a list of which phone sets I currently have in use at my place at any given time by going to this page:

and scroll down to the numbers starting at 383-4820.

You're Welcome Adam, and thanks for the offer of help with the 1A2 system. I have a lot of reading material saved on it and then I'm sure that I will have plenty of questions. You mentioned Asterisk which you are probably using for C*NET. The TCI Show starts today in Lancaster, Pa. and this was posted on the TCI List about a week ago. < http://tinyurl.com/3qwnymj > (I hope the link works.) Those of you on the C*NET might want to check it out and make some phone calls today & tomorrow.

Out-of-the-ordinary key sets I like:  AE 187.

Similar to a Call Director but with the line/hold buttons below the dial.  Three line buttons, three hold buttons.  Flash (Recall) and Signal (buzz) buttons above the dial.  I have one of these wired as my power fail set for my business lines (and an 85-E as a power fail set for my residence lines).

The great advantage of AE 187 (compared to 85-E and most overseas self-contained multiline sets) is that the user interface is totally intuitive: no risk of dropping someone by accident while juggling multiple calls.

The ringer is wired across line 1, and two high-voltage buzzers for lines 2 & 3.  I have an exclusion key for this around here somewhere, that I could wire up as a monitor switch, with which to enable listening to CO line activity if needed for troubleshooting.

I have a bunch of each of the following; these could be for sale (in a couple of weeks after I get my stuff together re. photos & shipping; I still owe someone here an AE speakerphone adaptor since forever-ago).

AE 186 (1A2), rotary, black, with LED keyset lights, NOS, ex Canada.

ITT 3-line rotary sets, 564-style, ash gray, NOS, minus the line cords, but I can set them up with 8-conductor cords (three lines, with two spare conductors for whatever purpose).

I have a AE 187... it in service and connected to a ATC teledialer 32... originally had several AE 87A's that I upgraded to the 187 level by switching out the light bar from a 3 lamp to a 6 lamp and wiring in the spare wiring stored under the keyset assembly. if you have some of these phones, check yours... there were 2 versions that I call the 200 series, and the 300 series... its the way the model number was stamped on the bottom... If the model number is 87200... thats the older version and can't be upgraded, BUT if the model number is 87300..... Check the phone! there will be extra wiring to upgrade the lightbar....Oh ya, you need some old 86 phones around to steal the parts out of.... I also switched out the shitch hook assemblies from the phones to get the extra wiring contacts for the lights!  John
