does anyone know anything about "application Forwarding"? I need to know more about this option as I'm not sure how it works.

It's also called port forwarding. Your favorite Web search engine will provide a plethora of links.
Applications typically listen on specific port numbers as servers or access them as clients, and thus a port is also called a service.
