Very interesting snaps!  Back in the early 80's I worked a bit for my dad's underground utilities company, part of the job was installing telephone conduit and manholes.  The conduit was exactly as your pictures show, it was heavy stuff, made of concrete and lowered in place with a backhoe.  I do not remember what the covers looked like, and we never saw them after we were done doing the basic install, so it's cool to see all the cables installed.  If they fill up with water how does that affect the integrity of the cables?

heath,  the cable is pressurized to help keep water out. but if the air pressure inside the cable falls to less than the water pressure outside the cable...we got trouble :(
