I found a dial version of this set that came up in discussion in the past, along with other D- marked variations of 300-type sets.

I was amazed at how clean the inside of the set was.  I didn't even have to blow off any dust!   8)

It clearly appears to be a military variation -- uses the TA-45G/GT dial and was Fungus Treated in June 1945.  Components include:

Inductor: D-161107  (8-11-45)  (S-II-45)
Ringer: D-161769  (5-6-45)  (S-6-45)
Capacitor:  D-171658
Housing dated  S 511 45

I've added some basic info to this page:  http://www.paul-f.com/we300typ.htm#D-170901

I noticed that the housing and the induction coil are labeled with the S– prefix in the date stamp.

If the hypothesis holds that the S indicates manufacturing in the 1944-acquired facility in St. Paul, MN, then it seems it was not only intended for restarting civilian telephone production, but also to supply sets for the remaining period of the war.
