Northern Telecom Receiver and Transceiver Elements

Any information on the superiority of these heavy duty units compared to their modern equivalents.

I see cheap paper speakers as receivers and electret mikes as transceiver on newer hand sets.  I know they use a carbon transceiver in those G handsets,  but not much info on the receiver element.  Any info would be great !
