Hello all.  I'm an old phone novice.  Have a few of them in use just for fun but don't know much when it comes to the internals or working on them.

My current problem is I have a Western Electric 354 on the wall that I really like.  However, when talking on it the folks on the other end of the call say my voice is slightly muffled.  How can I correct this?  Is there something as simple as just unscrewing the mouthpiece end of the receiver (pardon if I'm using incorrect terminology) and replacing the "element" thing inside?  Wondered if there was an easy fix for a novice like me.  Thanks!

Over time the carbon is the transmitter can settle into clumps. It needs to be loose to to work properly. Try taking out the transmitter element and rapping it sharply on edge against a hard surface, do it several times.

This with help break up clumps of carbon in the transmitter.
