Wheel rakes for buffer wheels.

I had been using buffer attachments for my drill, but I really needed a hands-free type of buffer.  When the battery on my cordless drill went kaput (won't take a charge anymore), I used it as an excuse to get a a bench-mounted buffer.  First thing I noticed is the new buffing wheel sends little threads flying everywhere.  Although my drill did that too, it wasn't as bad, the bench buffer is much faster.  I looked up how to break them in properly, but they suggest a $23 "wheel rake" that will probably turn into close to $50 by the time shipping and handling charges are added.  http://tinyurl.com/c5ymevp

I'm looking for a cheaper but equally effective and easy to acquire substitute to the wheel rake they suggested.  First thing that came to mind is perhaps a dog brush designed for thick fur.
The idea that a four-year degree is the only path to worthwhile knowledge is insane.

This is the wheel rake I use ($15.80):

I also use their cotton flannel buff wheels:

The buff wheels have the small hole so I drill it out for my 1/2" spindle.

I also get polishing compound and Simichrome from them.  Their prices seem reasonable.

Since it is only a few miles from my house, I pick up rather than having it shipped so I do not know the shipping charges.
