I have been meaning to ask this question for sometime now, I have a bunch of these dials/face plates in my collection, what is the black dot above the finger wheel for? Ma bell did everything for a reason, so it gotta mean something.

These number plates -- coded P-340016 -- were made c. 1952-early 1954 and fit only 6-type dials. They were superseded by the familiar 164A "universal" number plates that fit 2-, 4-, 5- and 6-type dials.

well, that explains that! funny how engineers design stuff.... black dot, really!
So is the black dot on a 1952-1954 colored 302 set desireable, or undesirable?
It sounds like is is desireable to me.
That was the fashion of the time. It is as desirable as a no. 6 dial is on phones from that time. If the phone has a 164 dial plate, you know it's been refurbished.
