Open the phone and take a picture.  Is something hitting the gong?  Is the gong touching the side of the phone? Is there something stuffed in the gong? ....Doug

About the ringing, it sounds more like clacking than ringing.  The two settings make it clack louder or softer.  It doesn't really have a ring sound, at least not to me.  Is this normal for a Princess?  Maybe this was on purpose since it was originally meant for bedside use?

Your description of the ringing sound of your princess phone as "clacking" reminds me of what my 1963 702B princess phone sounded like when it was first plugged in.

For reference, here are some video clips (at YouTube) of what it first sounded like:

Loud Setting:

Soft Setting:

In my case, the clapper to gong distance was wide of the BSP recommended 0.010 - 0.020 inch margin.

Thanks, nothing special, just Novus Plastic Polish.  I don't have a proper buffing wheel, so I use my drill press with the v-belt set to the slowest setting.  I've inserted a velcro pad holder into the chuck with foam pads with different pads used for the Novus 3 and Novus 2 polish.  I'm about to run out of the Novus 3, so I thought I'd take the opportunity to try some of the more advanced polishing techniques I've been studying here on the forum.

Gladstone,  I've just started looking at your videos and reading the information you posted.  There is a lot of great info there, thanks for that.  I just posted a Youtube video of my ringer on the Loud setting (see above) and it does indeed sound like yours before the adjustments.  Later tonight I'm going to try your suggestions and see if I can't get a decent ring out of the Princess.  Thanks again.

That is a good looking Princess you have there!   I think I need to acquire a red one!

As for the ringer, I had the same issue with my yellow 1968 702B when I first got it.   The "Loud" setting rang normally, but the "Soft" setting was just clacking.  The screw was in place, so I knew I wasn't in the "Off" position.   I tried re-positioning the bell to get it closer, but what eventually worked was bending the clapper closer to the bell.  Problem solved.
