Here's a good method to replace gongs that may be missing from an AE 40 straight line ringer with the original 1-1/2" gongs...

The approx. 1-1/2" gong that most 500 and 2500 type ringers use may be mounted on a AE 40 ringer, unless it is the smaller ringer similar to AE's Type 45
ringer.

The gongs mount inverted as the originals do, but may need smaller spacers under them to provide proper hammer to gong clearance. They can be rotated on the screw once mounted, and there is usually a little "play" that allows for
tweaking the adjustment some.

The best combination of gongs is 1 HI pitch "A" gong, and 1 LO pitch "B" gong;
A special gong from a Princess M1 type ringer can be used in place of the A gong to produce a more penetrating sound.

I've used this before on AE 40's with good results, and recommend it highly.

I guess occasionally someone decides the way to make a phone not ring is to remove the gongs. I've seen that occasionally.

I never have to search very far for gongs though since I have a bunch of AE frequency ringers that gongs can be removed from.
