Title: Western Electric Hand Set

Can somebody tell me on a Western Electric F 1 W  hand set ,What does the W stand for. On sone there is just F1 Nd some say F 1 W.  Thanks

As I understand it, an F1 handset was used by Bell System franchisees, an F1W was used by non-Bell telephone companies - ie independents.
