I have a D1 in my collections dated 230, same as a B1 I have sitting right next to it. I have never seen an earlier date on a D1. It is on eBay tomorrow. A little bubbling to the paint on the right, otherwise really nice original paint...Doug

if interested, check the date of 230, dated the way B1s were, not the quarter/year of later D1s...thanks...Doug

Has anyone ever seen a 530, 630, ..., 1230 -marked set?
I think I have only ever seen digits up to four in the first position, so I am not at all certain that this way of numbering means month, but rather quarters as well. I seem to recall there that there is some other parts evidence for this numbering scheme.

Karl....I thought that as well, so this is probably second quarter, 1930. Still an old D1....Doug

No doubt about that.

BTW, the January 1930 issue of the BSTJ has an article which is a reprint of an address given by Western Electric at a congress in Japan in late 1929, that includes a picture of a D1 as an example of the state of telephony in the US.   The article states that, at the time, the instruments were already available, even in color !
So, we might just find earlier samples yet.
