Ran across this 293 on Ebay - which I was a close 2nd to purchasing.  The box is different than the other 293's I've seen, and has a long receiver arm with a more primitive switch.  Is this a first generation for the 293, or has someone modified it?

It's a different model--212.

EDIT: Corrected below (124A)

Ok, that explains the differences.  Couldn't quite make out the model number in the pictures.  It was a nice box - hope someone here got it.

Sargeguy's list of wood phone types has a phone just like it marked as a type 124.

that's it!  Doesn't look these come up very often - should have bid a little more agressively.

Here's an even earlier model compact common battery wall set--Type 68--that recently sold for $438.

Edit: Added picture of the back, where the large condenser is located. Yet there appears to also be a condenser mounted inside--perhaps added later?????

That is a 124.  These were made exclusively in oak and are electronically identical to a 293.  They use the older style switch hook.  They are often re-designated as 293As, which is why it was listed as such.  I have a few of these, including a hotel version that is overstamped 293A.

I just bought a 20B from the same seller - with a A.B.T. Co. transmitter.  He also has a nice looking Ford Model A pickup truck for sale.  I wonder if I could trade in some of my phones for the truck?

My type 68 does not have the smaller condenser.

Someone got a good deal. A good pony is worth $175 +/- $25 or so. And the transmitter is a *229*
