Title: Another Aladdin product - Aladinette-II heater...
Post by: twocvbloke on October 14, 2017, 07:49:07 AM
Not technically a lamp I know, but, it helps keep the paraffin (or kerosene) powered toys together I suppose, but anyway, with winter closing in, I thought I'd poke about on ebay for another Aladdin heater, and happened upon this one which seems to be unused/NOS:

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/282684831282

Complete with original box, a brand new wick, the original wick cleaner, and of course a rust-free, clean and perfect Aladinette heater, even the Mica window is perfect, I can't wait to get it!! :D

And the best part is, the price was practically nothing at a winning bid of £10.50, though I am awaiting the seller getting back to me regarding postage (which I'd asked about earlier in the week and they agreed to "about £15" for it), as we say up north in England, I'm chuffed...  ;D

Anyway, obligatory pictures from the Ebay listing:

Got a message from the seller earlier, they told me that this was bought by their father in law who passed away 30-something years ago, and they had stored the heater since he passed, but he may have tried it out back then to make sure it worked as there is a little sooting in places apparently, but compared to my 37, it's pretty much brand new... :)

Just awaiting their invoice for the full price & postage, still can't wait to get it...  ;D

How big is it? Looks to be about 45 cm high.

Looks like a worthwhile winter project.  Looking forward to the consumers' report on it!

Apparently the box for the Aladdinette II is about 28", so, in Centimetres, I guess the heater is about 65cm tall, I've not found the specs for it yet so far, so will have to wait for it to arrive to measure it... :)

I think about the only project part of this Aladdin is charring off the wick (assuming it hasn't already been done), adding fuel and lighting it up... :)

I'll probably end up making a video of it when it gets here, though I'll probably be a smidge more talkative this time than I was with my Aladdin 37 back when I got that up and running...  ;D

Got the invoice today & paid, so the total so far is £25.50, all that's left is the waiting for Hermes to drop it off (no, not the fella who flew too close to the sun, the UK courier company!!), can't wait to see it... :)

It's arrived, but I'm holding off on pictures, as I want to make a video of it instead, comparing it to one of my Aladdin lamps (fitted with an empty mantle base so acts a s a heater only) and the 37 heater... :)

Will get that done sometime in the next few days, have to do it out in the shed where I can make as much paraffin smells as I like... ;D

A nice addition the the Aladdin theme, bet it throws some heat! Funny seeing the inside as its basically a lamp in design. Is the burner much different to allow a larger flame or is it the same and just uses the outer case to radiate the heat?

If it's anything like my Aladdin 37 heater, it'll definitely throw some heat out, that thing is amazing at turning a cold shed into a nice warm space for working in during the colder months... :)

As for the burner, it basically is a lamp, but without the mantle, the overall design of it is not that different to the mantle lamps either, it just wider in size (2 inch diameter wick as opposed to 1" of the lamps, smaller than the 37 though which uses a 3" wick), the rest of it, it's basically just a lamp burner... :)

And the way it heats, it's a combination of convection and radiation, the hot air from the flame rises through the heater and is released into the room, but also heats up the metalwork of the heater, providing a nice warm zone around itself like a radiator, though unlike the 37, you can't sit a pan on top of it and cook up a steak... ;D

Got my Aladdinette II video all done now, and have compared it to the 14 Super Aladdin lamp and to the 37 heater... :)

And a picture of the heater in it's new setting... :)

Seeing your new acquisition in action made me have a look at what types of heaters are available here.  There are several similar to your surplused unit at varying prices and even 1 Aladdinette II, though much too much for me.  Then I had a look at the Perfection heaters.  I had forgotten there were some made with glass center sections.  They seem better suited for cement floors though, than wall to wall carpet.

I think the Perfection stoves were sold as Valor paraffin heaters over here by Esso, if not, they're very similar looking, but looking at pictures of them in use, they seem to use a catalytic converter to clean up the fumes & flames, which I'm not experienced with, but I'm too spoiled by my blue-flame Aladdins, which by design produce a clean-smelling flame which makes them perfect for indoor use... :)

just do what us poor lantern collectors do.... hoard a bunch of old lanterns, place them on every horizontal surface in the house, and light! That way you sort of have heat and sort of have light....

Well, Peggy our youngest cat certainly worshipped my Blue stinky lantern yesterday (managed to get a decent flame out of it, so was running nice and hot), I could certainly imagine a room full of those lit putting out a fair bit of heat, though from the scent of one lamp, I think I'd want a separate oxygen supply too... ;D
