Maybe you can help with this. I need to know if this is an AE phone. Uses a 29s key in front. I will need vault and phone body key. What is that metal hanging from the shelf? Does the ringer unit go there? Are ringer units available? Anyone know the year of the phone? See pics! Need the side light for a phone booth also. Any help would be great. Thanks Ron

It appears to be Western Electric. Definetly a WE G type handset. There is a stamping on the front above the coin vault, should read Gray or Western Electric or both. Yes, the space underneath is where the ringer box should be mounted. I am not a payphone expert, I have no idea of the year, but one of our payphone experts should chime in on that.

Looks like AE to me, stamping should read Automatic Electric Company (nothing else) -as it's the complete square bottom. Before moved to Northlake (about 1956) it has stamped Chicago Ill USA there too but bevelled corner. Maybe still has ID plate on top, please take a look.

It does have stamped in it Automatic Electric great! Don't see a beveled section. Thanks now where to get a ringer and vault and key. Thanks Ron

This is the type of ringer you're looking for. Ignore everything except the black box- had to take a picture of one of Stan's auctions, haven't found better one on the quick :)

darticus,
Haf has the right idea. It 's called a type 33 ringer . Here's a pic of mine. You need to make sure it is not a frequency ringer.  SL will be stamped on the ringer like mine in the pic. You can find them on e place.  Hope this helps . stub

Does that mount on the hanging plate under the shelf? What is e place? Do they cost a lot. Having a key problem. I have a key marked 29-S and it opens the vault. Don't have the key for the top? This 29-S key won't fit top slit. Ron

Haf

darticus,

yes it is mounted on the hanging plate under the shelf. e place..ebay or similar. 29-S key normally is for the upper housing. Try again, sometimes it's a bit tricky to get the key into the lock when the slit is not exactly vertical. Maybe you're lucky and it will fit. Oh and please, take a look on the top of the phone if there is still an identification plate present-similar to this picture.

Just got it today so really confused. The 29-S fits in the Vault and opens it but the upper slit seems too tight to push it in. Here are some pics. I do have the plate see pics. Hope all will be good with this. Ron

Here's a diagram for later use maybe :)

Thanks Haf
I turned the 29-S over and it did go in the top, a turn a wiggle and I'm in. It worked! One key both locks. New inside pics. Time to sleep later. Thanks All Ron

you're welcome, glad that it worked out finally. The sad thing, this is not what I wish to see inside a 62-55, has been modified. But I expected something like that as normally a 29S key won't open the vault door.

Do you think it will still work? Can it be changed back to original? Why did they modify? Thanks ron

Haf

I don't have any idea if this will work or not like it is now. I don't have a clue what exactly this is ;)  If you have a landline- give it a try. Of course it can be changed back to original, but as a model 62 is not that common wont be easy to get all the parts..and rather expensive I guess.
