Take a guess at what this vintage electrical device was used for.  Hint: Cuckoo!

You gotta be kidding!
Either a clock, or, worse yet, shock therapy?

It looks like something to generate electricity. Probably for shock therapy as Bill stated. Cool looking machine anyway. Jiggerman

Yup, it's a vintage shock therapy device for mental patients.

Electroconvulsive therapy has success with depression and is still used today.  (shockingly to most folks-bad pun)  A couple of companies, at least, still make the ECT machines, and you are usually given some sort of anesthesia beforehand.  The amount of juice used to cause a seizure various depending on the person, as does the amount of treatments given.  I was once a counseling major in grad school, though we never did any ECT at our school, some people really find it to be a relief to their depression.

Thats an amazing bit of kit, have you ever tried it (joking!)

I put 500V through my mate with my megger, good clean fun (its milliamps folks)

ECT here also meant Edinburgh Corporation Transport (as was).
