Title: Find of the Month - August 2017
Post by: TelePlay on August 04, 2017, 01:20:08 PM
Post your "Find of the Month" here.

A "Find of the Month" is a telephone or a related item that you acquired during the month that you are particularly excited about either because of its rarity, the difficulty you had in trying to find it for your collection or the exceptional "deal" that you got on it.

The "Find of the Month" contest is focused on the collection of telephones rather than on their sale for a profit. To be eligible for the "Find of the Month" contest:

- The finder must have personally acquired and actually own the item.
- The item can be acquired for free but it can not be a gift or present from anyone.
- The item (or any of its components) cannot be put up for sale during the contest period.
- Only one "Find" per owner can be in a "Find of the Month" contest.

A Nomination Should Include:

1) where and/or how the item was found.
2) the price & shipping cost.
3) the forum link to the topic discussing the find.
4) the eBay link if won there.
5) and other information of importance about the find.
6) one or two pictures of the item.

Ideally your item would be posted in its own thread elsewhere on the forum such as "Auction Talk", "Flea Market/Yard Sale Finds" or "Collectors Corner" Board. Then you or anyone else can nominate your "Find" to the Current "Find of the Month" thread by posting at least one picture and other details including the price paid, any shipping costs and a link to the original discussion on the forum. It is not a requirement that your find be posted elsewhere on the forum but the more details the better.

Nominations of phones listed in other forum discussion topics, by members that do not own the item but realize it is indeed a "find" worthy of being nominated as a "Find of the Month" candidate, are always welcome.

Please pick your best "Find" to submit for the month limiting your entry to one phone or one "Find" that might include limited multiple items. If you have already entered for the month and come up with something even better either submit your new find indicating that it replaces your previous entry OR you can enter your new Find in next months contest.

Here ya go Terry. I won this ivory WE 354 on goodwill tonight for $9.00 + $15.23 shipping. I obviously haven't received it yet, but it looks ok. Will need lots of cleaning & some bleaching. I was thrilled with the price.

I'll nominate my SC 1197a I got from EBAY.

http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=18735.0

Asking price was $99.00 I offered $50.00 and they accepted. It has the wrong transmitter mouth piece and band, I'm looking for a replacement. I don't see many of these and I had to have one.

I'll nominate my 1936 WE C1 that I found at a flea market for $20. It has the original mounting bracket and hardware, plus very nice paint and an E1 in great shape!

Went to an estate sale in CO looking for an old phone, and got there late. Phones were all gone because it was the last day of the 3-day sale, and all that was left was a WE 551A switchboard. A bit of background, I know virtually nothing about phones and am not a collector, but it intrigued me as I remember playing with some equipment very similar when I was a kid-I lived near a switching station and the guys who ran the facility gave me a system that was inside an office building, loaded with relays and such. So anyway, there it was, looking absolutely beautiful and entirely complete. It had a $1000 price tag on it which I thought was outrageous. So I offered them $200 - they talked it over and said "yeah, sure, we don't want to move it again".

A full discussion of this cord board can be found at this link:  http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=18594.0

I was going to gut it and add electronics, LEDs etc., but on the extreme persuasion from others here on the forum, I decided to preserve it and work with what I have. My plans are to make it work as an interconnect for a few old phones in my game room, and so far, I believe I have accumulated enough parts to make it happen. The main cable, about 10 feet long, is still intact along with virtually every wire inside. It must have been in the guy's living room for years.

Here is the find. It's about as clean as they get as far as I can determine. Then as an added bonus, I found a perfect condition meter in it once I got the front lock unlocked. All it needed was a D cell and a 30V battery and works perfectly (not a speck of corrosion on the battery terminals!).

It's been a while since I nominated a phone, so I will nominate my E type Western Electric desk phone.  $159, but hasn't arrived yet.  It's been hard finding any information about this style phone.

Western Electric E type  (eBay listing) (http://www.ebay.com/itm/VINTAGE-1930s-BLACK-ROUND-BASE-ROTARY-TELEPHONE-WESTERN-ELECTRIC-GOOD-COND/322680543064?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2057872.m2749.l2648)

A discussion of this phone is at this link:  http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=18793.0

It is an E-style "handset mounting" (not a telephone) that has been converted to a single-line handset mounting.  These retro-fittings often were done to re-use parts to fill the demand for single-line sets during shortages of equipment because of wars, etc. You can see what it looked like originally, by visiting the paul-f.com website and checking out the various types on the "handset mountings" page.

How did you determine that it is an E-style telephone? I have not seen that style mentioned in the BSP's.

Good question. I remember seeing these on paul-f's website:   http://www.paul-f.com/weHandsetMountings.html#E5in

as a WE keyset with an "E" handset, but this nominated phone does not have keys, has room for them and same shape but no keys. I'm sure someone knows the full story.

TP:

I edited my entry (#10) as you were posting yours (#11). I had forgotten that the 205-type was actually called an E type. Sorry for the crossed message syndrome.

Time to vote (it's September 1st somewhere).

A wide variety of finds for August. Will be hard to pick the one best so everyone gets 3 votes and in 6 days, we'll see who comes out on top.

Good luck to all nominations.

That's it for the August 2017 Find of the Month and a what a good contest it was! Everyone got significant numbers of votes and the result could have gone any of several different ways. In the end though the winner was oldguy's WE Ivory 354 on Goodwill for $9.00 + $15.23 shipping! Congratulations oldguy.

Everyone should be proud of their finds and their votes this month. Even with three votes I struggled to decide where to put them.

Thanks everyone for playing and keeping it fun.

Yep, 1st win, thanks everyone. I usually get the coveted last place😀😀 or tied for last place. I'm thrilled, there was strong competition. Now I get to restore the phone but after I finish the head gasket project on my car, sometimes reality comes 1st.
