I bought this phone in April and it just sat on my to do shelf. Yesterday afternoon I was running out of stripper and Monday is trash day. SO.....I gave it a shot. It was professionally painted gold, but the paint has seen better days.

I was amazed to find it very shiny underneath. The paint came off like a dream and I think it is nickel, or at the very least VERY shiny metal. I had an MP from another phone. This sure as hell shocked me. If I had known, it would have been done 8 months ago. It is two inches taller than m Kelloggs. It does have damage to the bakelite handle, but I am more than pleased with the way it turned out.

Some of the best treasures you already have waiting for you to realize....Doug

Great find Doug!

The Ericssons I have seen were never gold painted. So it was indeed not original. Someone probably antiqued it up.

It is nickel plated.

How did you remove the paint? As you remarked to be out of stripper, did you sand it off?

Arwin...I used the last of my stripper, the orange stuff that is fairly gentle to the skin. The paint just melted off. Why would someone paint a nickel set?? I amazed myself, it looks much better than the flash pictures show. MUCH better.....Doug

Why indeed. I'm glad they decided to paint it. I've seen many antique phones where some vandal has removed the nickel to expose the brass underneath. It's more antiquey.

I'll dig up a pic of an atrocity I saw today. It'll give you an idea what kind of person would do that.  ;)

Look here. What do we have here. An "nice" old wooden mounting for a cast iron (really) backboard. All to imitate an antique.

All good and well, but at its core is an original (part of it, anyway) prewar BTWC Antwerp built wallphone. It's original cradle has been replace with a new old style antler cradle. The handset is completely new made, but it looks like an old ericsson handset.

The base of the phone is a square steel plate box, which has now been stripped of its black paint and has been copper plated. The upper housing is a metal casting, still black.

Poor thing.
