Metallic vs. grounded ringing

I'm still trying to figure out my Redbar ringing issues from this thread:
http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=251.0
I was able to adjust the ringer to stop the "tapping" when the phone was dialed, but only by tightening up the ringer so much that it now doesn't ring at all. I have been using it as a non-ringing phone (I have quite enough ringing ones, anyway), but I'd still like to get it sorted out. Going through the manual for the phone, I found instructions on switching from metallic to grounded ringing by moving a metal bar in the phone. The problem is that I don't really know what these terms mean, and which one I should be using. It is currently set to "metallic" ringing.

It also has another bar that switches the condenser capacity between 1.0 and 0.5 mf. It is currently set to the 1.0 position.

Does anyone have any suggestions about these settings?
