Well, I've never done this before but there is always a first time for almost everything. Since the seller put a reasonable reserve on this phone, which has been met within the first half day of it being listed, and there are 3 1/2 days left to either put in a guess or to revise a guess already entered (one revision is allowed in an actual auction contest), I am converting Special Auction 14 to this real forum auction contest, #188. Everything is carried over from Special Auction Contest 14 and the gap remains the same so with the phone already at $224, think or rethink a guess and give it a try.

Absolutely any and all members are very welcome and strongly encouraged to take a guess. After all, there are no wrong guesses, just one lucky one. No one knows the winning bid on any auction until it ends. However, it is important to get your guess in before someone else grabs your guess.

The phone was listed about a half day ago in a 5 day auction with a reserve (which has been met) starting at $0.99 and now up to $224. There may be a little or a lot more upside in the bidding. So, now the question is, what will it sell for when the auction ends?

NOTE: we will use a $15.00 gap rule between guesses to prevent crowding. As such, keep your guess at least $15.00 away from prior guesses for this contest. That would be about a 2-3% gap for this phone and it makes it easier to place your guesses.

The seller listed it as a "RARE Automatic Electric 2A deskset dial telephone WORKS not Western Electric" with the item condition as "Used" and "THIS TELEPHONE IS IN PREFECT WORKING CONDITION. JUST PLUG IT IN AND DIAL OUT OR RECEIVE CALLS AND IT RINGS PERFECTLY. THE DIAL WORKS SMOOTHLY AND THE NUMBER RING IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION AS PICTURED. THERE ARE NO CRACKS IN THE BASE AS YOU CAN SEE IN THE PICTURES. THE HANDSET IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION. THE RECEIVER CORD HAS WEAR AS YOU CAN SEE BUT WORKS FINE. THE MODULAR CORD WHICH YOU PLUG IN IS NEW." with the auction listing description as "RARE AUTOMATIC ELECTRIC 2A DESKSET TELEPHONE IN AMAZING CONDITION. WORKS! JUST PLUG IT IN AND RECEIVE OR DIAL OUT AND IT RINGS PERFECTLY TOO!  EXCELLENT CONDITION WITH NO CRACKS IN THE BASE AND NUMBER DIAL HAS NO WEAR THAT I CAN SEE BUT YOU ARE THE FINAL JUDGE BY LOOKING AT ALL THE PICTURES. COMES WITH A WIRING DIAGRAM. SEE "CONDITION" SECTION ABOVE.  FANTASTIC CONDITION!!"

Isn't this the ringer on the base plate?

Firstly, is there any reason this telephone is referred to as an AE 2A? As far as I know, there was only ever an AE 2.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/201450657861

(and in competition: http://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?topic=15078.msg156552#msg156552)

Secondly, these phones were originally released with Type 23 dials but I've never seen one designed specifically for the Type 23 dial. I assume that the phone was designed to be compatible with the Type 24 dial even though that dial was not yet released.

Any thoughts?
