Thanks!  now that i've done a coil, i know where there's an AE monophone with its original wooden ringer/crank box (no dial) that has a damaged coil, possibly a slipped screwdriver. I'd have to buy some enamled wire for it but the gouge isn't deep.

LOL, I thought you were going to say you were going to turn the box with it's crank into a ringer coil rewinding machine (after seeing the box you rigged up to unwind/rewind the NE coil)!

not a bad idea!!!

If im going to rewind coils again, I want a more steady jig. Half a cookie box isnt stable enough.  :)

I used to have a coil winder for watchcase receivers. It was a home built contraption that used the front of an old wood phone and the frame from a magneto. There was a tab at the end of the magneto shaft for attatching the coil.

It appeared like it would work well, but I never tried to rebuild a receiver with it. I sold it off a few years ago.
