And I believe the outer shell is metal so they should be pretty indestructible.

Yes, while the base board is wood (red circles), the cover is metal. While I was looking for photographic evidence that it is metal, I discovered what many others probably already know. This subset allows one to adjust the ringer/clapper volume.

From the outside, it shows a rivet and a screw (yellow circle) for each of the two "gong" brackets. The screw end shows an elongated hole in the cover. Loosen the screw and move the bracket in or out (both of them) to a desired volume.

From the inside, you can see the pivot rivets and the threaded adjustment screws on the other end (adjust/pivot image).

But you guys already knew this, right?

When an installer was in a hurry to remove a telephone set with a subset ,many times he would just cut the set free and leave the subset. The telephone set was the important item to turn in at the shop.
Also remember sets were rented not sold to the customer

Wow! Just wow-wow (double wow)!!!! That was a bit more than what we-the-guessers thought it would go for.

So, the winner of Auction Contest #214 is wds, who with the 5th entry into the contest offered the winning guess of $355.00 giving him his 10th auction contest win. That's the good news for wds. The bad news is that the guess was so far away from the actual selling price that his 6.52% average miss will increase to 10.04% - ouch! But, all that aside, once again our congratulations go out to wds for another win in the CRPF Auction Contests and for moving up one rung in the Contest Standings.

The phone was won by z***o ( 259 ) with a high bid placed about four and a half hours before the auction ended. It must have been a very high bid for it was not topped by r***r ( 618 ) who got two sniped in during the last 5 seconds of the auction, one at five seconds and one at two seconds for end time. Must have surprised him in that his $578 bid was not enough to own the subset so quickly placed a minimum bid of $608, which also was not enough but no time left. The perils of sniping. So, when the dust settled, z***o took the phone home for a mere $609.00. The auction saw 7 bidders placing 14 bids.

Thanks again to all who played. As always, there is only one way to get on the winner's board or move up a rung - you have to play to win.
