Title: ANTIQUE NICKEL PLATED BRASS POT BELLY CANDLESTICK TELEPHONE
Post by: TelePlay on February 06, 2012, 10:03:47 PM
So, what was it that got $1,478 for this candle stick. It started at $49 and had 14 bids.

It's in poor condition but sold high so can anyone help with what this was and what is its historical importance?

Thanks.

In my opinion, this is one the most sought after phones.  When it is completely restored it may fetch $4-8K.

Thanks, but what is it? Who made it? When was it made? Where was it used? That sort of stuff. I know nothing about this phone so would really like the history of it and yes, I would like to see it restored.

This web page is a good resource for identification. Although it is not totally comprehensive,  it does provide good info with photos.

It is an 1895 Western Electric Potbelly candlestick,  sometimes known as a San Francisco Potbelly.

Russ,

Thanks for the info, and the link. Didn't know about that one. Much appreciated.

I looked in some of my resource books for similar models.  There were actually many potbellys with similar looks.  Based on the fine detail differences, the receiver assembly, and face plate design, I am almost certain this is a 1900 Connecticut potbelly candlestick.  You can find a reference to it in "Telephones. Antique to Modern, by Kate Dooner, on page 97.  THey estimate the value at $3000 to $4200, of course in like new condition.  If I get time I'll take a photo and attach it.  Hope this helps.

I was able grab a photo of the Connecticut potbelly.  Hopefully no one will sue me for copywright infringement for something like this  ;D
