For the first time in very many years, the Confederation Bridge to PEI is completely closed to ALL traffic.  Of course, being winter, the Northumberland Ferries are also not running, and al flights to and from Charlottetown Airport are all cancelled. Winds currently are from 100-130 km/h. One cannot get on or off the Island.

Additionally, the Hillsboro Bridge across the Hillsboro River in Charlottetown is 100% closed down - one cannot get from Charlottetown to this side of the province. I suppose that doesn't make a lot of difference, as plows are off the roads due to zero visibility

Tomorrow, it looks as though all the Island will  be shut down again. Winds are forecast to keep up at least until noon.

So far the power has stayed on here not thousands of customers have lost power across the Island. I say this a bit hesitantly, as I am afraid I will jinx myself! My, how I love spring!

Photo: RCMP (Mounty) car trying to travel the highway earlier today... Its a lot worse now. Only 4 wheel drive Mounty vehicles and snowmobiles are running now. All other traffic has been told to stay off the roads. Fire and ambulance are being escorted by plows on call.

Holy cow.  A month ago we had snow.  Today, mid 60's, I mowed the lawn for the first time Saturday, trees are blossoming, Box Elder bugs have hatched, allergies are starting to kick in, grandson started little league.

I sure hope for the best for everyone up there going through that weather.  It seems like everyone has had their share.  I live in Washington State, and up near Seattle there was a landslide from the ground becoming saturated from rain.  Many people are feared dead.

No more horses, red jackets and perfectly horizontal hats for the mounties I take it?

Dave can let us know if he sees the RCMP on horseback there before he sees them driving again.

Hang in there Dave!

Hi Folks:

I am still here, and we are still fortunate enough to have power here, but major outages have occurred across the Island. From the sounds of the scanner this morning, plows are still mostly, at least, off the roads, and I have heard nothing of the RCMP for the last half hour or so. They may be out feeding the horses  ;) . No, the red uniform and horses are now only for ceremonial use - what you see in the photo is their everyday uniform, and Horsepower has long since replaced horses! Mind you, today may be one day where there would be an advantage to using horses!

Not being light yet, I haven't had the opportunity to check the mess from the storm, but I just checked the web site for the Confederation Bridge, and it is still showing a complete closure. Winds are still extremely high, and are forecast to remain high until noon at least. I don't know if the Hillsboro Bridge from Charlottetown remains closed. We can be sure few businesses will be open today.

It isn't what one would call a disaster - more of a good old fashioned storm, but one like we haven't seen for many years.

It is nothing on the level of the landslide near Seattle ot the missing Malaysian jet, but certainly a curiosity compared to recent years. The last time I remember the Island shut down to such an extent would be White Juan, a storm which occurred the winter following Hurricane Juan. Prior to that, I remember many storms like this, but none so late in the season.

The good news? Long range forecasts show temperatures going above zero for the next two weeks as they should, so the storm's mess should be short lived.

Last year, I should point out, by now we had no snow left, and even the ice from the water was gone. There were a few farmers beginning to plow their land before April 1st.  Not this year! Many won't be able to even FIND their fields!

Aftermath!
Well, the worst of it is over, though it is still snowing and blowing, but the winds have backed off somewhat. Plows finally went back on the roads at 8:30 a.m. and the clean-up begins. Still, the Island is pretty well shut down, but we now are on the upside. The Confederation Bridge has been partially opened, but taller vehicles are still being restricted. Most businesses and all government offices and schools are still closed for the day.

The building shown in the lower photo (my electronics workshop), has a five foot drift circling it that wasn't there before the storm. A tree has fallen behind and to the left of it.

Could have been worse, but it sure makes Spring appear to be a very long time away!

Update: 9.15 a.m. Confederation Bridge Closure upgraded to a full restriction again on all traffic again due to winds..Reported Wind Gusts from Storm; Sside 113K, Tignish 111K, Souris 107K, Chtown 99K, Malpeque 126K. This storm brought this winter's snowfall up to 389 cm., or 12.75 feet..Plows are not on the side roads yet.

Here in Wisconsin, we have some snow coming down, but it just turns to water once it hits the ground. Other that that, the weather has been in the upper thirties and lower forties, with snow left over slowly melting.

We've got a bit of thundery weather on the go here at the moment, though I think it formed after the clouds passed here, cos there was a hail shower an hour ago, and then the thunder started (at least the first I heard it, was mower tuning in the shed) about 20 minutes ago, which sent me indoors like the coward I am (I hate thunder & lightning!!)...  :o

Though I think the snow drift at the door somewhat trounces a bit of thunder... ;D

As you can imagine since the plows aren't yet on the side roads, we haven't gotten out yet. But here is a photo of the Trans Canada Highway in Mt. Herbert tweeted out by the RCMP yesterday at 3:48 p.m. with the caption it is impassible. No Kidding!

Now, here's a funny one. I just went to the porch to look outside. Linda is trying to shovel a bit of the snow - I can't because of my heart, but she is between the car and the truck shovelling. On the left hand side of the car is a drift even with the top of the car's door panel. Our neighbour's dog was standing on that drift, and looking over the hood and down on Linda as she worked!

More Aftermath!
As the day goes on, things are improving somewhat, but we still have a large amount of drifting and high winds. Many roads are only one width wide, and plows are trying to widen them all of the way. The Confederation Bridge has been partially opened, but certain classes of vehicles are still restricted; vans, trucks, tractor trailers, etc., because of the 70+ Km/h winds.

Here are a few photos Linda took this afternoon. One shows our driveway after the neighbour's blower made its pass down the main portion. I should point out that before this storm, there was no more than 6 inches maximum left on the ground!

One shot is showing the entrance to the Museum. Guess there will be no visitors today :)

Now, Its Time to Move on Towards
Spring!

I just saw the CBC news on television - amazing video of roads still only one lane and drifting in as soon as the plows come down, of people who spent the night in their vehicles (including police and first responders), video of a chain reaction accident on the Hillsboro Bridge, and of a house which burned down last night in Cymbria since fire trucks couldn't get near it, etc.

It was a good old fashioned storm. Back in history, farmers used to tie a rope between their house and the barn, so they could hold on to it as they went to do their chores instead of wandering off in a blizzard and losing their lives due to the storms. This was one of those storms. I wouldn't have wanted to have to step even one foot outside last night! Oh, my!

But it is spring, but where is the spring-time weather?
