I need to check this with you knowledgeable folks before I purchase, does this look genuine to you guys?

Writing on stem says Peel Conner, Coventry. I've checked online and from what I can find out it seems ok (early GEC), but there are such clever fakes out there.....

Thanks.  :)

The pictures are pretty poor but it looks like a genuine Peel Conner candlestick. It looks like it has been "brassed out".

The transmitter was made by British Western Electric in 1923 - it is not a type 23 candlestick. It is equivalent to a GPO Tele No 150.

It was probably used in South America by UT - it may be marked UT or UT within a triangle.

Thanks for that info. I now have another pic (below). I have zoomed in - there is a triangle.

What does UT stand for, I can't find it referenced, is the T  'Tropical'?

I can see what looks like a GPO #10 dial. Every bit of its original colour (black) appears to have been removed.

The phone is in Europe, seller wants $78 for it.

I am on the fence with this one.....  :(

It is a tropical phone but that is not what the 'T' stands for. UT (Union Telefonica del Río de la Plata) was an operating company that operated in South America - principally in Argentina.

I'd say a collector imported it to Europe from South America. $78 is not bad but what is the postage?

About $18 for shipping (I am also Europe).
Seller originally wanted approx $112 but it hasn't sold so it has come down a bit.

Thanks for the replies.

I fell off the fence and it is winging its way to me.
I'll be adding a bit more info and better photos to this thread once it arrives.

I now just need to add WE, AE and SC sticks to the collection. Am actively looking........  :)

It has arrived.

Phone marked with the triangle and makers stamp 'Peel Conner, Coventry, England'.

About Peel Conner:

Photo 1 (from above link) Peel Conner delivery lorry.
Photo 2 and 3, Peel Conner factory photos
(credit 'Coventry we have lost').

The phone:
Cables appear to be original, and apart from some slight fraying to one end (which tucked away into the base nicely), they are in good condition. A few very small dings to the metal. This phone looks like it has done its job and seen some service.

Inside the base a double folded piece of plastic was pushed between the body and dial screws. I am guessing this was to stop the dial loom from making contact on the metal of the phone, it is pretty tight in that area so I removed the plastic, replacing it with electricians tape.

Original dialcard, #10 type dial marked with the Triangle. Zooming in with the camera, the dial was fairly grubby. It felt heavy, sluggish, and wouldn't return. I don't have any specialist dial cleaning kit, so used compressed air, contact cleaner and an oil pen to get it turning nicely again.

The phone still shows a slight trace of its former black colour around the seam at the base of the stem.

------

NB: In 1968 deep excavations were dug across the Peel Conner factory site through the Peel Conner golf course for a new sewage system. This was the setting for the famous scene in the film 'The Italian Job' starring Michael Caine, which showed British Mini cars racing through a giant pipe.

It looks like it has had an operation.

Those clips were made so that the dial turned when you tried to fit it - just to annoy you.

At first, I wondered that same thing and looked for 'surgery'. Had it under the magnifyer too.
Not been adapted, is the same as any other, except hook on right not left.
Tricky to get a better photo, image starts to blur on zoom (I need my old favourite, Photoshop).

The image you posted has a narrow depth of field and the part of interest is out of focus. Can you spot focus on the hook?

Thanks
Jack
