Title: Crosley - Sultan Phone in Cherry Finish (Garage sale finds)
Post by: HELLO CENTRAL on May 30, 2009, 12:12:31 PM
Garage sale finds today

I always tell people not to rush at garage sales.  Luckily I followed my own advice today!

Crosley - Sultan Phone in Cherry Finish

AND a 1973 white Bell Telephone Candlestick.

Both were under ten dollars each!

::) I have to admit I was kind of on auto pilot, but made a safe landing!

Thanx! I've been catching up on all the things I couldn't buy!

This is the newest of this style.  Older ones include: one made out of brass, which someone had made into a lamp; one painted black, which had been used as the engineer's phone during a WOR radio remote;  one normal one with dial.

Best, Walt

Hey Hello Central, you're back!

I passed up a couple of garage sales today, had to go to familia stuff.  As we drove by one my 16 year old said, "There are probably some great phones at that one since we can't stop".

Yes, thank you!  Missed all of you.  Computer crash earlier this year.

I know that feeling.  When there are several sales, which one first?
Even worse,  what to do during the Winter when there are no sales?  I  go Good Will Hunting at least twice a week.  Not too many rotary phones.  One of my  finds phone-wise was an early model NORTEL Maestro1500CW (almond) in the box it had been shipped in.

Here's my find from this weekend: an AE80 key phone with lots of extra buttons and doodads whose purpose I have no idea.

I stopped in an antique mall on the way home from Florida last week, and passed on a really nice hardwired pink Princess for $25. I'm kicking myself now for passing that one. Also passed on a really nice Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphics camera, in the original box, for $45, which was just stupid on my part.

Sadly some of the best ones do get away.  I've never seen a phone with so many buttons!  Must have been used in a very busy office?  I also look for interesting graphic art.  I passed on a really unusual signed piece, which was half-off of $100.  I went back hoping it would still be there.  It wasn't.  On the other hand I bought a very stylized framed deco poster for $3 only to realize after I looked for it on line much later that it was created by an art gallery for an Erte anniversary.  Possibly signed by him.

I haven't found anything yet this spring at garage sales.  I do check out a flea market that is about 25 miles away.  It is held each Tuesday and Sunday.  This is a large, outdoor flea market so if the weather is good there are usually a hundred or so vendors.  I see much of the same stuff from one week to the next however some days, like today there was some "fresh meat".   After a couple of weeks of not seeing anything rotary, I did see a few phones today although I didn't bite.  Most notable were a couple of 302's.  Each seller wanted $20 and was pretty firm for their 302's.  Both had #5 dials but dial plates in worn condition.  Each had corner cracks which kept me from buying.  I also saw your basic refurbished black 500 minus the dial card ring for $15---again firm.  The base date was from '56 but the cover was hard plastic.  Plastic caps on a G1.  I also saw a couple of those Design Line phones---kind of a Frenchie looking phone that I have no interest in having but did look at the price tag--- $15.  Mickey-mouse touch tone phones are common.  Just an idea of what's showing up so far this year in the flea market world in my neighborhood.

Still searching for that blue 302.  :)

Happy to say, I'm not that technical.  There aren't any flea markets nearby, so I have to rely on thrift shops and house sales and garage sales.

Also passed on a really nice Graflex Pacemaker Speed Graphics camera, in the original box, for $45, which was just stupid on my part.

It was at that price.  I've got an early Pacemaker, 1949 I think, with several Graflite flashes, and a large stock of bulbs.  I've also got just about every type of film holder which it is possible to use with it:

5x4 plate
5x4 film
9x12 film
9x12 European style 9x12 single sided plate/film plus the adapter for them.
Polaroid roll
Polaroid 405 and 550 pack
polaroid 500, 545 and 545i sheet
Kodak Readyload, two sheet and single sheet versios
Grafmatic
Fuji Quickload
Fuji Quickchange

I'm sure I've missed out one or two, but I can't think what they are.

I've also got a Graflex 'B' RB reflex camera, a MPP Micro Technical Mk.8 which was given to be as a box of bits, an MPP monorail, Ex. Royal Air Force, in a very heavy wooden box about four feet long, and a 'Bulldog' kit-built 5x4.  I just wish I could find the time to actually do some photography.

This is my picture from the Film-Tech forums; I'm not exactly good-looking I'm afraid.

The other two pictures are the whole of a shot taken with the Speed Graphic a few years ago, and a small section of the leading coupled driving wheel and the crosshead, at the original 1600 dpi scanned resolution, to show how much detail there is.  The original TIFF file is over 100MB, and there's even more detail in the original film.  This was shot on Fuji RTPII 64 ISO, and was something like two minutes at f8 I think.

I've been photographing some of my better telephones on 5x4, using the MPP Micro technical, but I haven't yet found time to make up the chemicals, and process the film.

Stephen,

I've been thinking about starting a post on vintage cameras over in the OT forum for a while-I'm glad to see that I'm not the only one interested in them. As of yet, I don't have a Graflex, although considering that one of the few American-made cameras of any note, I'd really like to add one.

The camera I ran across was a 2x3(or 3x2 to you folks across the pond :) ). If it had been a 4x5, I would have jumped on it, no question. The only thing holding me back was that there's only one 2x3 emulsion currently on the market, and it would take a fair bit of hunting probably to find a roll film back(to make it useable). On the plus side, though, it did come with a Graflok back, 7 film holders, and a Polaroid back

Anyway, I've been in touch with the place, and they're willing to ship it to me. I'm seriously considering buying it.

By the way, I love the photos. I've always been a big fan of British trains, especially the Great Western.

Notice the tears.  Years ago, when I worked in radio the local PR for The American Red Cross offered me his Graflex outfit.  The price was right, free.
I said,"no".  Buried among my latest good will hunting  finds is a Russian SLR.  Please, don't ask about all the Polaroid complete in box items I've passed on. Oh, at one time I was a volunteer at a thrift shop, and got to price the cameras.

I've got a fair number of those myself. Do you want them?

I like Polaroids, and for a while bought nearly every one I came across. Unfortunately, one-piece Polaroid film and Polaroid roll film are now gone, and pack film is nearly so(although Fuji makes a version that they're going to keep around for a while). Even the pack film is too expensive to use very often.

I've decided to really shrink down my Polaroid collection. All I'm keeping is a 125, which was the one that really got me hooked on cameras in the first place, and a 250, the best of the consumer Polaroids.

Have to check with my cousin Frank.  He's into photography, and has published calendars.  He was doing a lot with Polaroid a couple of years ago.
Interesting results.  Probably in time Polaroid will return.  Our local COSTCO has turntables for sale!  So. . .
