I got another clock in the mail today, this time a GE 2H20 'Epicure'.  This one has been painted but looks like from the edge that it was originally red.  The paint job is reasonably well done, but I might want to strip it.  Does anyone have any tips, especially what strippers are safe on the plastic shell used on this phone?

That's a beautiful clock.  Did you know about the Telechron forum?  It's an excellent resource:  http://www.telechron.net/forager/  Members there would be able to tell you the best way to remove the paint.

Thanks Bridie.  Yes, I already knew about the Telechron forum and have read some of the topics on it.  I have been resisting joining because I spend too much time on this one.   :)   I probably will join it eventually though when I just have to see the photos.  After reading your post, it dawned on me that I hadn't tried searching it for paint removal tips, so I did that and it looks like DOT3 brake fluid might do the trick (NOT brake cleaner!).  I rubbed a bit on the back edge of the case and it doesn't seem to have affected the plastic in any way.  Further searching suggests that soaking for a few hours will be required to loosen the paint.  I think that will be a little project for me this winter.
