I thought this AE 40 was heavy when I took it off the to do shelf. When I opened it there was a metal bar that stretched across to screw the dial into. I am not an AE guy, but I have done some damage on few. These are normally all bakelite. When the dial is out , there is space you can see through. This had a very early AE 24 dial in it. One vent slat on the grill is missing  :( and I never noticed. This was in my bedroom for years and the frequency ringer gave a light tinkle that I loved. I never noticed the missing grille slat as the cord was right in front.  Pic 4 is a regular all bakelite AE40

Anyway, AE guys and gals, is this a different AE 40??....Doug

If I'm correct the earlier AE40's had the metal dial retainer and later they switched to solid bakelite.  Does it have a carry bar in between or just a space where a butlers handle would have went (earlier models)?

Frank....just a space, but it has the two holes for the butler handle who unfortunately also missing 8) ....Doug

Is it an optical illusion or do I see a rivet at the 9 o'clock position?
