What size is standard for rotary phones? The large ones or the small ones?  I notice that oldphoneworks.com has both but, it seems like all the phones Ive been working on that use them are the same size.

Which one though???

The small ones are for vinyl covered wire, e.g. line cords - the larger ones are for crimping on thicker cloth covered wire.

There originally was a third size found in phones.  One that was in between the large spades for cloth wires and the tiny ones for vinyl wires.  The third one was for rubber conductors which were midway between the other two in size.

Does the smaller size for vinyl wire work on U1/U3 receiver elements?  The smallest size I could find at Radio Shack is larger than the original spades, and too large to fit due to the restrictive layout on the back of U1 & U3 receivers.

Does anyone still sell these small terminals in brass? I bought a bunch of them from Odis years ago, and find I prefer the brass ones to the tinned terminals Don now sells...

There is a German seller who sells them on ebay.

Phoneco (phonecoinc.com)--their small ones are brass (or at least that color); their large ones are not.

Thanks. I will give them a try in a little while - their site is messed up right now....

UPDATE: Their site was straightened out a bit later int he day. I called and ordered 300 LUG sm gold as well as a few phone tips (PIN) I was wanting. The lug price quoted on their page falls from $0.30 to $0.11 per lug in 100 lots.

Personally, I find these make better crimps than the silver ones,, but it may be a question of technique or simply personal preference. I do find that these fit into the crimper better than the others and make a crimp indistinguishable from factory crimps.

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction!

Are the Radio Shack ones too large? They seem to fit fine in my receivers.  Perhaps you could bend the lugs? Also, for extra small vinyl wire that the lugs don't pierce, I found you can strip some of the wire, bend it back, and crimp it over the exposed wire and the insulation. Works like a charm.
