Push button dialling but Not likely DTMF like our phones use. These were key senders that sped things up for operators as compared to dials. They were hardwired directly into the toll switches or they may have used MF into the toll switches.

there are also videos on youtube that someone did some kind of an experiment with,it shows what the operator used to hear when someone dialed out with a rotary. I did that myself as an experiment.i was at my parents house sitting over the last couple of days and used there rotary dial phone and called my own phone number and once my answering machine picked and I did as though I was going to leave a message, but, instead dial a couple of numbers with the finger wheel. when I got home I realized that it worked.
