What is this thing? It's a Verizon hub

It's in my friend's new apartment.

I don't know exactly what they call it, but I toss them in the garbage all the time. It's a Verizon hub, the internet, phone and cable processes through this thing first. All the equipment plugs into it. They were installed in the closets in all the apartments on the property I run years ago. I chuck them and they do not get replaced. I suppose they have something that is better these days.

Thank you. Can you be more specific? Is it a modem/router? Would my friend use it to hook up phone and internet service? It looks nothing at all like the equipment I have from AT&T for the same purpose.
Or is it obsolete? Can be pried off and chucked?
