Here is the first of a series of goodies picked up this morning, an NT 7L30AA fusion splicer for fibre cables. It was one of two bought by Island Tel in 1985. Note: the scope stored in the lid. It has an automatic alignment function, but no manual - If anyone has a manual for one of these, I sure would appreciate a copy or PDF file of the manual. I was told this morning by the former Island Tel employee who gave be this that that year, he ordered two for the utility at a cost of $15.000.00 each. This was designed for single fibre cable, seldom used now. Some details found for this: The automated fusion splicing set is a portable unit for thermally splicing optical fibers. It features a computer based system that can store 32 optimized fusion parameter programs for different fiber types, combinations of fibers and several ambient conditions. It provides multi-stage heating and time profiles and controls fiber positioning. Auto alignment and one-person splicing operations are provided.
This will be added to my growing Fiber display in the museum, consisting now of an NT Light source, optical power meter, cleaver, and stripper.

Mighty nice! One doesn't see too many of those running loose!  At work, we use one with a video screen as opposed to a microscope.  All of our fire alarm, radio repeater and CCTV networks are fiber linked.

The great thing, is that it works. I decided this morning to try fusing a couple of pieces of fiber using it, and it did a perfect job. I have not yet tried using it in auto align mode, but as of today got a copy of the manual, and it gives the procedure for that. Basically you put the end of one fiber into a transmitter, the end of the other in a receiver, and the machine lines up both fibers so that they have the greatest signal before fusing them, guaranteeing a perfect joint Assuming you did  good job of cleaving and cleaning the fiber). No need in that case to use the microscope. The internal computer aligns the fiber ends in the fuser. These were purchased by Island Tel back when they ran the fiber cable over the Confederation Bridge and then began installing fiber on PEI.

Be careful with any broken loose fibers, they are supposed to be like cactus spines.

Does anyone have a few fiber splice protection heat shrink sleeves I can use in the display of this? These go over the spliced fiber.

Sorry to have to leave you hanging on those, but the authority secures FO materials like Tiffany's.
