Gents, I noticed while cleaning up a model 40 that the number plate has the 3 locating pins on the backside. They appear to have been removed for the most part. The plate was really dirty (the entire phone was). Could this have started life intended for a W.E. phone with the locating pins?

I picked it up probably in the very late 90s, but never did anything with it until now. It appears to be original to the phone. I remember picking this one up locally with the claim from the owner it came from their cabins in northern MI.

will not fit a WE dial . The marks might have been supports to keep the plate off the bottom of the kiln

I understand it won't fit a W.E. My question was, did the plate start life in that direction, possibly? I measured it compared with a 132 plate, and the pin locations are identical in location on the backside

poss that they were made in the same factory. WE and AE did not make everything they used

Considering the inner lip is raised and how the numbers and fingerwheel notch are clocked, plus how WECo manufactured their own number plates as presumably AECo did as well, the answer would likely be no.

Those three points on the back of the plate are probably were from the standoffs used in a kiln to hold the plate in the air while being fired.
