I found this while looking through a June 1954 issue of Popular Mechanics on google books, and found it interesting:

Well... besides the lamp kit, at least the ad suggested other "non-lethal" uses, like inter-house and house to barn phones...

I used to live on Lunt ave. in Chicago a little more than a mile west of that address.  My mother was living in that neighborhood at the time that that ad ran.
