Just saw this in the Times.
Man, this guy really had an influence on everything that has come since.

All the texting and cell phone setups are a direct result of his research.

I love the early attempt at push button dialing on a 302 set.

Welcome to the forum.

I believe the Times article was a bit generous in allocating thr responsibility to the Human Factors guys.  There was a huge team at work for many years developing the products.  There are numerous Bell System Technical Journal articles on various components written by various development teams.  The Dreyfuss firm also did a lot of ergonomic research and styling work.  Many developments were made at the model shop in Indianapolis and elsewhere.

You can see some of the setps along the way here:

and don't miss the photos of the real phone shown in the patent drawings...

This one is an early prototype, before the research team realized they needed a 1 and an 8, 9 and 0 in order to dial a large percentage of phone numbers.

* Actually this is a 250 used as an Inter-phone.  Apparently this was extension 1 of 7

I think he was George Carlin's Uncle.  There was a family feud and George changed the spelling of his last name  ;D
