302 ringer question

This is my first post and I love this site. I recently acquired a second 302, with no ringer or cradle (excuse me if that isn't the correct name) that holds the ringer. I have an extra 302 ringer, so I drilled a couple of small holes in the base and installed the ringer. It sure doesn't sound like my other 302 that has the ringer mounted in the cradle. It seems that the cradle gives the ringer more volume and better tone quality. Was this by design? How were the original ringer cradles installed on the stamped metal base? Are they removable without drilling or cutting?
I wouldn't have drilled the original sheet metal, but it really is a rusted beater, so I don't feel so guilty. I suppose I could replace the entire base, but am just curious.
Thanks.

Welcome to the forum ;D
The 302 ringer "cradle" ,as you call it, is mounted on rubber which isloates it from the base. Having the ringer tightly bolted will definetly change the sound. I have just called it the ringer bracket, not sure if that is the "correct" name either. I had a similar experience, I had a 554 mounted on my kitchen wall with a standard metal backboard. When I sold it I switched to a plastic backboard and the ringer sound was completely different. How long did it take for your first 302 to multiply? Be careful or you will have more soon and they may even cross pollinate to 354's or 500's ;D

You might find this interesting.  A 1947 video of the manufacture of a 302.

That's an awesome video on how to build a 302. Could learn a lot from that vid.
Thanks for posting.

That video is no longer available.  I am having the same problem - how to replace all of the O rings or grommets without having to drill out the rivets.

This topic is 7 years old, the last post was in 2014.

The video is indeed dead and marked as such.

How to replace the ringer plate grommets without removing the rivets is/has been explained in April 2012 with the method posted links at this link:
