My plate for the LIU arrived today. It was issued the year the LIU was made, 1938. Though repainted by the previous owner in the original color, it will look great on the trailer/LIU combination! Despite the fact the photo makes it look black, it is really dark green, roughly Bell green, making it even a better match for the LIU!

Oh, here he goes again! But this will be the last one unless I eventually find period fenders/lights for the LIU/Trailer combination. The newly received 1938 PEI plate is at least temporarily mounted, and the layout chart is re-installed in the LIU.  1938 is the year this Bell Telephone Line Installation Utility  truck back was made.

Sorry, in this photo, the details of the Tool layout chart don't show, but it was a compromise between showing the plate and the interior of the LIU and showing the chart, so I chose this photo. It is a dull day, threatening to rain, but I wanted to get this done.

Very Nice, Dave!
There are some of the porcelain tubes you need for the doors on eBay:

One offering 52 of them for $29.99 BIN. That should about fill the doors up!

Or I may just get some white PVC conduit, chop it up and cheat :-)

Dave don't stop posting pictures. They are great. I love seeing how you are coming along with this unit.

Updates are going to slow down, though. I have far outspent my budget on it, but at least I have it stable now, and have it on the trailer so I can move it into the barn in the winter to protect it. I still have a lot of work to do on the front compartment - it looks good from the outside, but I have a lot of rust repair to do inside the front compartment. It was stored for years with the ladder mount holes un-plugged, and water dripped into the front compartment. Repairable, but it will take time. It is now 100% water tight, and looks great from the outside, but I still have to tackle repairing the shelf inside the side door. It has rained for the past couple of days, and no water is getting in to any part of it now.

I am having fun with it - I haven't tried to tackle anything like this for many years, and it is going to make a great display for the museum! I am slower doing this kind of work now, but enjoy it just as much as I used to.

I got a few things done this morning, interrupted by a trip to the hardware store. I picked up 3' of 2 inch ABS tubing, and two end caps, one press on, and one screw on to make a waterproof holder for my Brace bits; also a ten foot bar of 3/4 inch plastic electrical conduit to make faux ceramic tubes for the back door of the LIU.

I cut this up in 4, 6 and 8 inch sections, and populated the back door tube racks with them. Now, they are gray, but I will pick up some spray paint one day and paint them ceramic white.

As my longest installers bit for the brace and bits is 30 inches, I cut 6 inches off the end of the ABS tube, installed the ends and the cap, and it has lots of room inside for my three long bits and 4 or 5 shorter bits, protecting them from breakage, and keeping them dry and from rusting. One end has a cap cemented in place - the other a screw cap. This fits conveniently on one of the long shelves of the LIU.

I also found time to clean up the barn workshop storage area some, making more desk space for working on phones there...

Good morning's work! I don't even try to keep it as clean as the workshop inside the museum, but wanted to create some elbow room  :)

No pictures?? :)
I figure I have bored people enough with photos - when there is a major change, I will post photos.  :)

Thanks, Harry. I know I am enjoying working on it. It is by far the largest project I have done in years. It is taking me a long time, as I can't work steadily on anything anymore, but I am enjoying it and it is nice to know I can still do it.

As I get more done, then, I may post a few more photos...

I just didn't want to bore anyone.

Hey Dave, Do you have a Stanley Yankee No. 130A Spiral Ratchet Screwdriver in your truck back?
You can have this one if you don't. It was made in Canada.

DavePEI

Hi Doug:

No, I don't have one. I do have a Stanley Bell System push drill and a brace, but no screwdriver!
