How to make a chirper work?

I have several phones that have chirper rather than bell ringers similar to Larry's AE80 phone. (If you don't mind Larry if I repost your photo). Will this device still works on today's lines?

That's a potentiometer for impedance matching. Early AE 80s didn't use an equalizer varistor like the WE 500. Notice the further pics in his post show a standard ringer assembly.
