Title: Free Dial testing software available
Post by: dsk on November 28, 2018, 12:40:03 PM
It is obviously not new, but I found it this week, I have tested it and find it suitable for dial testing.

What is the drawback?
1) The text on the buttons are in German so we need to make a short translation picture, but the readings are clear and understandable.

2) you need an RS232 port, (I have an adapter USB-RS232)

To the point: Here is the link:  http://uuplds.net/file/a7p53Ixq (http://uuplds.net/file/a7p53Ixq)

Download the link, run the file, and it asks for the serial port, type the number of the port, and Enter (twice), Then adjust EP to at least 2 to not get resonant pulses, then just start measuring.

I have just used pin 9 and 7 and tested the pulse contacts, or complete telephone, and that works so well.

I have a USB/RS-232 adapter or two somewhere around here.  I will have to give this a try.

Here is my adapter setup, only 2 wires for measuring the pulses, not separate measuring of other contact springs.

The setup works best when I connect the USB to the PC, and not to a hub.

RS232 Pinout

NSI are the pulse contacts on a German dial
NSR is a contact shorting NSI in rest position
NSA is the contact shorting the voice circuit when the dial is out of rest position.

#1 is right, to not use #6 on this dial is right, but #7 is the common wire, so please switch #7 and #9.

This explaining of pin-out may it be easier to know how to connect to dials of different makes.

I have a Norwegian version of Win 7  (64 bit)

When I run the program I'm asked if I really want to run it, and I do.
The next popping up is to choose the right com-port. mine is 7, so I choose 7 and next OK.
If I try to measure when 1 and 7 not are shorted.
Since I have learned that I connect at least those to to the pulsing contacts.
Then I change the EP to 2 and for more stable readings.
Pessing the upper rigth button "Prufung EINSCHALTEN" Gets the right screen, and then I can dial...

I am not a computer specialist, but how far did  you come? Did you get anything at all up on the pc screen? The software starts up on mine without any serial port, but stops if I not have any port to choose. But I have no clue about what it believes are com1 and com2, I do not have them as com plugs.

Tried on a laptop and it works there too. (Win 10)

Hi Dsk,

software start without com port(default com1).   when I connect RS232  software ask com port number. I try with Win10, 8, 7, Me, Vista, Xp,  98, 95, Only I never try with windows 3 :)

thanks

Looks like the pc comes up with com 5, so try to change the 1 to 5 and go on from there.
(Try to plug in the RS232 before you start the software)

I have now learned that these adapters may not work well on a newer PC. My luck was to have an old one, the first one not running on steam :-)

I think I have Windows 95 somewhere. IIRC it is on about a dozen Floppy discs!  ;D

I bought this one: https://goo.gl/3McaE9

UGREEN 3FT USB to RS232 Serial DB9 9 Pin Converter Adapter Cable With Chipset

Not the cheapest on eBay, but it looks well made, and it works om my WIN 8 computer.  Tried the driver on the old adapter who works on win 7 but that did not help.

The software is free, the adaptor are not to expensive.

I do not know how to share an exe file.  http://www.personalberater-kellner.de/PDFStellenangebote/

(http://www.personalberater-kellner.de/PDFStellenangebote/)Edit: Now it is attached as a zip-file.
Thank you for the help doing that.

@segaloco
(https://www.classicrotaryphones.com/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=105756)Maybe you or any other software expert are able to re-design this software to accept microphone input signals?
This is the most easy testing of rotary dials I have found.  The analyzing by using soundcloud, reading and translate the output to numbers are more accurate, but more of a job.

Thank you to all that are willing to use time on this!

In order to update or improve the software the original author would need to share the original source code.
Or probably just re-write it making it more portable

I have to guess, but this seems to be pretty old so the original writer are probably not easy to get in touch with.

There is an email address given in the program (menu: Help COM and program). Have you tried this?
I suppose the author of the program is "Felix52" in the German forum:

He has been active on that forum not too long ago. No email available there, but you might add an entry (English would be fine).

This great software are the most exact easy to use and free software to determine make-break ratio, and dial speed.
You need a serial port to the computer and that is no standard anymore so if someone with great programming skills could modify or make something similar for a modern PC or even a cellphone it would be a great tool.
The only drawback not mentioned is that a ringer with capacitor in the circuit may give wrong make-break measurements.

Using Audacity, reading out time stamps on each start and end of the pulses (measured via microphone input) and then calculate everything in excel gives a good reading, but it takes time, and more skills to do it right.

Audacity was the only way to test the strange dials from Oslo's first W.E. exchange that had shorter pulses, except for the last one that was extremely long.  Great honour to Felix that made the software and shared it many ears ago :-)

The big advantage of the COM port is that it supplies enough power to put a "real" DC load on the dial contacts. Also it has a number of control pins in addition to the 2-wire data line, which allows to measure pulse and shunt contacts at the same time with no need to build further circuitry for the purpose.
Adapters as mentioned in this thread are still available, work with modern device and are absolutely worth the expense if it comes to reliable and easy dial testing.

The mic connector of laptops etc. supplies a tiny DC voltage and current for typical electret microphones, but basically is an AC only input. The switch status appears distorted (sawtooth signal) at the sound card, still allowing to measure switching time but not a real DC measurement.
