This Pekin red 302 is in decent shape except for some cracks at the back, and I didn't think much was wrong with it until I noticed that someone cut up the shell to put a modular jack on the back! Pretty sad, if you ask me.

Ends about 2  hours from now so we will see what someone thinks it is worth, for repair or parts.

Sold for $66.55, not a bad price for a red handset, straight red handset cord, dial with a soft center finger wheel and a base with looks like good feet. Not sure about the internals, the ringer mount that is. Rivets look reversed, don't they?

John...I agree, great price for a Red WE handset and matching handset cord PLUS a 5J or 6D dial. I have seen a 5J go that high alone....Doug

Did anyone notice the crack and the missing piece in the left rear corner?  That's why I thought it wouldn't bring much more than $40.  I'm surprised it brought what it did.  Also, some might consider the modular jack to be  an upgrade.

All 302s made from 6/52 (maybe earlier) to 1954 have the "reversed rivets." That's because of a redesign of the ringer mount. On the new mount, the B1AL ringer was attached with two small screws through the ringer frame. The one large screw was no longer used.

From my observations there may have been some overlap between the two types of mounts.  For example, I have a 3-52-I marked base that already has five rivet holes in the plate, but still has the old ringer mount.  The next one up in time, 4-52-I, is constructed the same, five holes, old mount.  From 2-52 I have a set that still has only the old three holes.
Then, I have a hole in my collection until 10-52 and 11-52 which both have the new mount already, and five rivet holes.

So, quite possibly then it we might expect to find the new ringer mount as early as March 1952.

There are five holes for the ringer mount, but only three are used.  Is this a sign the old ringer mount was used on this phone?

The phone had the new ringer mount already.  The open holes are those of the old type.

I never had a 302 with the newer ringer mount.  My 5302 had a 302 base dated 3-52 and even it used the older ringer mount.

Well, most commonly you would probably find them on the colored thermoplastic sets, which were made perhaps 18 months longer than black sets.  You have to look for black sets made in the last 6 months or so of 1952.  It is very hard to find 1953-dated BLACK 302s, if they were even made. I have not found one yet.
But the black specialty sets 306, 307, etc, were still made in 1953.

Here is a new-style ringer mounting bracket from an ivory set.   The old one had a horizontal screw preventing the removal of the ringer, while these have two vertical screws securing the ringer onto the bracket.
