Hey everyone!
I'm a proud new owner of a rotary Ericsson PTT type T65 - TDK     78-9
Here's a picture of the front: http://imgur.com/MQvn2.jpg
Bottom: http://imgur.com/gROe7.jpg

When I bought the phone, the wires had no plug so I had to wire it myself.
I kind of guessed with all the possibilities but the Red/green  blue/yellow was the only one that gave a ring.
Photo of wiring: http://imgur.com/iRzqd.jpg

Now, the mystery:

- When dialing the T 65 from my cellphone, the telephone rings. On picking up the handset, the ringing stops on the telephone, but continues on the cellphone I'm calling from.
Oddly the earpiece, once lifted, does not let you hear or say anything. But if you dial a number on the rotary dial, the line will open on the cellphone, as if the T 65 picked up the call, but you still won't be able to say or hear anything.

- When dialing from the T 65 : There is no dial tone. Dialing a number will produce a clear beep after each dial rotation, but does not result in a call.

Any hints, tips or ideas are greatly appreciated.
Thank you!  :D

If this is made in Sweden, it may be the right to use yellow and blue, and no others to ring and tip.
(The colors of the Swedish flag) :D  just as the Norwegian phones from the 50'ies to the 80'ies had red white and blue to the our 3-pin jacks. (Blue was usually not used)

Thanks for your reply!  :)
How can I tell the origin of the phone?

Did you mean rewire in the wall plug itself? I tried to keep blue and yellow only in the plug :
http://imgur.com/Pv7Fc.jpg (doesn't even ring or have a dial tone)

I've researched a bit, but don't understand what you meant exactly. What should I rewire? Sorry but I don't want to mess it up by experimenting, I love my T65  ;).
Here are pictures of the internals, it would be great if you could point things out to me...

Thank you so much for replying and sorry for bothering you.
I hope this thread will be useful to other people too...

Hello,

It's a Dutch phone, made in the Netherlands/Holland. It's a standard Dutch PTT model T65:

http://www.telefoonmuseum.com/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=49:the-t65-telephone&catid=20:telefoons--telephones&Itemid=20

There is a schematic at the bottom of this page:

http://telephony.infc.info/index.php?option=com_docman&task=cat_view&gid=3&Itemid=2

Inside your plug you should connect the red wire to one terminal/pin (L1) and the blue and the yellow one to the other terminal /pin(L2)
The green one should not be connected.

Let us know if this works for you.

Thank you so much for answering, teka-bb.
Sorry I'm taking a few hours to answer (Blame time zones, I live in Lebanon).
I saw the museum page earlier. That's an awesome website! But couldn't find anything relevant to my problem.

Is this what you meant?  http://imgur.com/lNYbK.jpg
Tried it but I had the same symptoms as the initial post. No dial tone, will ring when called but won't answer, will not call etc...

I tried to look at the schematics but I couldn't understand the language. I posted pictures of the internal wiring earlier... I tried to match things but couldn't.

Do you have any other ideas? Questions?
Thanks again, you're all awesome.

If the T65 rings on incoming calls than it's wired correctly to the phone line.

If you are not able to break dial tone there might be a problem with the dial. Do you get dial tone when you pick up the phone?

Do you have another dial telephone that does work on your phone line?

Does your phone line support pulse dialing? Are you on somekind of voip service? For instance through your intenet modem?

My guess is that there might be something wrong with the T65's dial. You should at least be able to answer a call.

To test your T65 phone without the dial remove the dial from your phone by disconnecting the blue, yellow and red wire. Take a piece of wire and connect the terminal of the dial that reads Gl (yellow wire) with the terminal that reads Rd (red wire).

You should now have dial tone on your T65 and also be able to answer calls.

If you send me a picture of the back of the dial I can tell you if it's wired correctly.

The rest of the phone seems to be wired OK.

I referred to the plug, but as I see Remco solved the problem.

We have had a kind of tradition in Norway and Sweden using the colors of our national flag on the wires.  :D

1 - No I do not :(
2 - No, but I have a normal phone that works well.
3. Most likely yes, it is supported. The house is old and it's connected to the national phone provider. Haven't updated their system in decades. There is no internet modem in the house. Phone plugged directly into the wall: http://imgur.com/EW0JX.jpg

4- Here is the setup you suggested: http://imgur.com/JihaX.jpg (it is 1 cable, GI connected to Rd , the loop is in the shadow)
No dial tone and no change: When I call the phone, and I close the handle (push the things down), it rings. When I remove my hand, it stops ringing but won't answer.

5- It was tricky but I did my best, feel free to request more:
Dial back: http://imgur.com/QIi8R.jpg   http://imgur.com/wM01j.jpg   http://imgur.com/YL5Ii.jpg    http://imgur.com/wjNqp.jpg

... Am i doing things right? Do you think it's reparable?
Thank you for your time, really!
Let me know if there's any other info I can provide...

PS: Thank you d_s_k :)
PPS: When the earpiece is off the hook, I can dial home normally, the other phone will ring and not sound like the line is occupied. When I close the earpiece as I am calling, the T 65 will start ringing, but won't answer if I remove the earpiece. Maybe this will help...

Hello Lebfon,

Can you please take pictures of the wires inside the handset? Does the handset contain a receicer and transmitter element?

Hello Lebfon,

Of course! The more I look into it, the more I love this phone... It's a bit frustrating, but I'm sure we'll work it out.  ;)
Here are the pictures:

Earpiece:
1 - Open: http://imgur.com/kjDY3.jpg
2 - Wiring: http://imgur.com/oLdAj.jpg (Red & Blue)

Microphone:
3 - open: http://imgur.com/UDsJ8.jpg
4 - close up: http://imgur.com/MyNLw.jpg
5 - Wiring: http://imgur.com/XGx7y.jpg (Green & Yellow)

Does this help you?

Lebfon

Well, I'm obviously not an expert the handset seems fine to me...
I was looking inside the phone today and I noticed that there is some damage to the transparent unit that holds the handset mechanism: http://imgur.com/wuKP9.jpg
Plus, one of the springs is loose: http://imgur.com/zGIXb.jpg
So I thought maybe the previous owner fiddled inside, so I opened it.

I noticed that one of the little metal pieces is not making contact with the other, is it supposed to be this way? http://imgur.com/QoMiE.jpg
So I decided to test it: http://imgur.com/O6Zar.jpg When I pressed on the thing, the phone rang when called (closed handset).
As the phone was calling, I used a screwdriver to push the 'little metal piece' in contact, and then the line opened:http://imgur.com/XXffa.jpg
I still could not hear or talk, but the line opened.

I'm not sure if this is useful to you, but you never know...
Waiting for your opinion.
Thank you!  :)

Hello Lebfon,

Your handset looks OK. The problem is most likely the switch hook mechanism because it's broken.

The transparent unit is almost impossible to fix when it is broken. I can send you pictures of how it is suppose to look.

If you want I can ship you another circuit board with the transparent part attached or a complete working T65 phone.

You can have the part or phone for free, all you have to pay is the postage.

Let me know if you want me to find out what the shipping will cost.

Hello Remco!
Sorry it took me a while to reply... :)
I waited until I could see the guy who sold it to me. While he offered another phone (not a T66) as a replacement, it wasn't a very nice one, so I said no. I'm going to try to find a replacement part in the flea market. Sometimes you just get lucky.
Thank you for your support and offer, really.

I live in Lebanon though and I'm guessing the shipping charges, if even only for the part itself would be quite hefty and the delivery unreliable. (I've had items shipped to me that just never arrived)
Do you have any idea how shipping will cost?

Another option is to ship to new york. I'll be there in the summer, it might be cheaper... Who knows?

Again, thank you for you time.
It was really fun to poke around such a beautiful machine.
I understand if it's just too much trouble and you can't do it, but let me know if you have any idea on shipping costs.
Thanks again!
Lebfon
