Is this really a Western Electric dial as this auction claims?

The pics do not show that it is marked Western Electric anywhere, and I've never seen a Western Electric dial that was not in the format 1234567890.  (This one is marked 9876543210).

I don't think Dan Golden would say it is Western Electric if it was not.

That is a pretty strange dial. I agree, Dan knows what he is talking about!

I recall reading an article about the early years of automatic exchanges which said that WE numbered their first dials the opposite way from Strowger/AE to be different.  They were sore that AE beat them to the automatic switching idea.  I would expect this dial to go for quite a large sum.

My guess is the european Western Elctric dial for the 7A rotary automatic system that was primarily used in non North American CO's. It was able to handle backwards or forwards numbering and I recall the fingerwheel had the same layout, balanced evenly on each side from top dead centre. Is it a WE 7001 dial possibly? Where''s Roger Conklin when we need him?

I'm sure if someone posts it to the list Roger will speak up!
Or at least Steph!

Terry is correct, it is a 7001 series dial. It was manufactured in Antwerp, Belgium by BTM (Bell Telephone Manufacturing Co.) This dial was used in Europe before any Bell System dials were used over here. With this dial the number plate revolves with the finger wheel when dialed.

Adam

So then... it's not *really* Western Electric.  It was the European Western Electric...

Thanks for the update Doug. I wasn't following it. A pretty valuable phone with that dial in it!

Could you please check; is the last digit with a longer break than the others?
This was used in the very first automatic exchange in Oslo, with reverse dial.

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking.  Everything I know is at that included url.
