You bring up a good point Adam, really the dominate hand should be used for the cranking rather than the simple task of just holding.

Exactly. And, as I've pointed out in previous threads with fictitious pics of left-handed phones, a right-handed person naturally picks up the phone with his left hand, to leave his right hand free for writing and other tasks.  Therefore, for a left-handed person, the receiver would hang on the right.
