How do I make this work?

I have this weird frankenphone that I just got from a garage sale and I have managed to make it so that it will ring, and I can hear stuff, but the phone will not transmit.  I have tried 2 different transmitter capsules, and that did nothing.  Is it just because the cord is bad, or is it something else?

What happends if you disconnect the common wire to handset?

I will have to give that a try.

I can see 2 main reasons for this error, and disconnecting C may help to determine whats wrong.

1) If it works without C the transmitter and receiver cords should change place.
2) the T and C connections (transmitter) are shorted caused by bad wire, or bad termination. You will hear the dial tone, but not your selves.
In addition a very little risk of 2 bad transmitters.

I don't have a good feeling for your ringer capacitor, but it works as long as it works  :)

Thank you very much!  It was the cord.  I replaced it and it works great now.
