Where are  Jorge Amely's Picture Albums  now ?  I use to LOVE looking at them ?
the various links are not working.

thanks

WEBellSystemChristian

Google replaced Picasa with Google Photos (not to be confused with Google Images), which is a practically identical version of Picasa.

Ah, yes, so it comes to be a hard fact (here's where I get on my soap box for a bit).

In my topic titled "Example #1 for not using image links to photos on external sites", it is shown why using links to an external (not on the forum) picture hosting service is neither recommended nor desired, with examples of broken links shown.

Today we get the bad news that PICASA has decided to move on from their album service to something else and if anyone clicks on a link to a photo that was hosted by PICASA, they get the first image below.

I went to the PICASA site by way of a Google search and got the second image below.

The good news, the pictures are not lost, to those who posted them.

The really, really really, terrible news is that any and all links on the forum to any and all PICASA hosted images are hereby lost FOREVER. The time and resources and effort needed to go back 8 years to look for every broken link and replace it with a new link, if the person who posted the image is still around to get them, down load them, post them to another site and provide the new link to a moderator to repair broken links is beyond an impossible task.

As such, many great series of photos used to show phones and explain how to restore phone parts, such as dial disassembly, cleaning and repair, are gone forever, unless the person puts the images somewhere else and fixes the link they posted years ago.

From a database point of view on the forum, the loss of every PICASA link to hosted images is a devastating loss yielding many text topics now meaningless without the images to support the discussion within those topics.

This is indeed a dark day but one cautioned about for a few years now when asking that all images be posted to the forum by members and not linked to an image or group of images stored in an external site for fear that something like this may just happen.

So, off my soap box, but the caution still stands. Post all photos to the forum. Do not use links to externally hosted photos.

WEBellSystemChristian

At least Jorge Amely is still around, and he can transfer everything to Photos. Is it possible to have a sticky topic in 'how to post photos in CRPF' for links to members' updated photo sharing accounts, and we can simply redirect older topics with Picasa links to that one (assuming that person is still around and updates their account)?

First, you have to go in and look at every topic in every board for any posts or replies that contained a PICASA link, now dead.

You would then have to have a new link to the image from the person who posted the PICASA to the site where the photo now resides.

You would then have to replace all of the dead links with active links.

And after all that work, all of the now new and working external links could be lost if the new picture hosting site made just ONE character change in the host site's URL, much less the entire host sites URL is changed, or shut it down in total as seen with PICASA.

Monumental doesn't even come close to doing that, and only if the person were still around to get the images for direct forum posting or amending the broken link, to search the tens of thousands of posts to the forum.

As I've found many times while searching for information, I will find it in an old post, say from 2010, only to find the supporting images gone. The text says "this is how the part comes off" and the linked image to show how the part comes off is dead, gone, not there and as such make the entire topic useless.

Anyone who searches the forum for information knows exactly what I am talking about.

The photos I have hosted on Picasa are still visible.  Pretty much every reference post I have made uses Picasa so hopefully the will continue to be there for the foreseeable future.  It was my understanding that Picasa will serve as an archive for your old photos, but that you cannot add to it.

Where are they visible to you? Log out and go into one of you posts with a Picasa link to see if they are still visible.

I just searched for this post by Jorge Amely on dial assembly and got a 404 error. Maybe he can see it in his account but the URL link in this post to the public side of his album does not work

Here is the link found in the above forum post, to see directly what is seen.

Can you post a link to one of your replies that has a Picasa link in it that you think is working to see if anyone else can also see the pictures?

Yes, the image to your google album work but both of the Picasa links in this reply give me a 404 URL error

I just copied the address from this post and did not link it directly from Google docs, where it is now located.

Most of the pictures in this topic were originally hosted on Picasa  and I have not changed any of the addresses.

It seems as if a direct link to the pictures will still work but url links to the website do not.

A newly linked (from after the date Google made the change to Picasa) external image from the new Picasa URL hosting the old image will work, it a new link, for some time going forward. The new URL to the image would be different than the URL link to the old, now dead, Picasa location.

Sargeguy

I think those dead links have been dead for a while.  The same thing happened with pics of my collection too.  I'm not sure if I rearranged photos or what.  The photos hosted on Picasa for the last few years all show up as "googleuser etc. and those should still be good.  I know that there were a few ways to link to a photo hosted on Picasa, and it seems that whether the link survived depends upon how you originally linked to the photo.  Anything with Picasa in the link seems to be useless.

I gave up after searching for bad Picasa links when I got to January 1, 2010. The farther back I went, the more links were posted. In 2010 there were about 90 links posted per year while there were only about 20 links posted in the last 3 years - that's progress so I guess the warnings about using external links over the past 5 years or so are being heard.

So, Google, in its great wisdom to kill off Picasa, has in one fell swoop broken all of the following links (going back to Jan 1. 2010) so any images in these links are no longer available as posted. There are many more in the first two years of the forum but I just can't do anymore right now to make this point.

Going through these, there are some that really don't matter but there are quite a few very important tutorials that were being reference over and over to answer question on how to do something that are no longer available.

Finding bad links is easy compared to the monumental work that would have to be done to fix these links, if that were even possible.

And I have great sympathy for those member who have used Picasa not only for what was linked to on the forum but also their loss of that platform for all of their photos. They are still available to those members but posted links are no longer valid. The result in the dreaded 404 error screen.

I did this to show the magnitude of the problem created by 1) using external links that can go bad; and 2) the devastating effect on parts of the forum when they do go bad.

Just one little change like this, ending Picasa as a hosting site and changing its URL, has done in many good topics on the forum.

I remember using many of these links to see how something was done and even use the link to direct someone with a question to a very good answer.

Each and every one of the following links has to be changed one at a time to fix them with a new external link, which itself could go bad in a few years. An task that is so large in scope that it will never be done to all of the dead links. Maybe a few, the really important ones, will be updated by the person who originally posted them but that is up to the member to do so.

As of this reply, ALL of the following topics were damaged by the now defunct Picasa links posted within them.

The first line is the forum topic title linked to its location
The second line is the Picasa link and the date it was posted

Note: Some Picasa links appear numerous times because that link was important and used time and again over the years to help someone.
